Four names filed under hotel
The 2014-2015 version of the site sorted its 40 member properties into categories, reachable from a "Browse by amenity" menu: Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses, and Hotels. The Hotels page listed exactly four names: Hotel Alcott, Peter Shields Inn, Southern Mansion, and The Chalfonte.
Four, against a directory of forty, is the smallest of the three categories by a wide margin, and the smallness of that margin is itself a fact worth sitting with.
The four names, as printed
Hotel Alcott was posted March 24, 2014. Peter Shields Inn was posted March 21, 2014. Southern Mansion was posted April 1, 2014. The Chalfonte was posted February 24, 2014. The page gave no description, address, or amenity list alongside any of the four names; it functioned purely as a category index, not a profile page, and this archive does not hold the individual property pages that would have sat behind each link on the live 2014 site.
The Bed and Breakfasts category, by contrast, held 28 names on the same style of page, and Guest Houses held 8. Counted together with Hotels, the three categories cover 40 category-slots against the same 40-name "All Accommodations" roster described in the member-count article, though two names, as a separate matter, appear twice across categories rather than once each. All four posting dates for the Hotels category fall within a narrow six-week span in early 2014, the same tight window that covers most of the directory's other listings as well, a clustering this wave also found in the Guest Houses and Bed and Breakfasts categories.
One name in this list is a repeat
Peter Shields Inn appears on the Hotels page and also on the Bed and Breakfasts page, with the same posting date shown in both places. The 2014-2015 site did not explain the double listing anywhere this archive has found; nothing on either category page notes that the property is cross-filed under a second heading. A visitor browsing only "Hotels" would see it; a visitor browsing only "Bed and Breakfasts" would also see it, with no cross-reference pointing from one page to the other, and no note on either page acknowledging the property's presence on the second list at all.
That overlap, and a second one involving a different property, is covered in full in the article on the two cross-listed properties, which also sets out the Guest Houses side of the same pattern in detail elsewhere in this wave.

Why "hotel" was the narrow category
Cape May's historic lodging stock, on the evidence of this directory, leaned heavily toward inns and bed-and-breakfast-style properties converted from older private houses, which is consistent with the association's founding purpose of preserving converted 19th-century "cottages" rather than operating purpose-built hotels from the outset. A word like "hotel" fit only a handful of the larger historic properties still trading under that name by the 2010s, which is likely why the category stayed at just four names while Bed and Breakfasts ran to 28 on the exact same directory.
This is a narrower use of the word "hotel" than a visitor comparing options along the broader New Jersey shore might expect walking in, where the word commonly covers a much wider range of property sizes, national chains, and price points. In this specific directory, "hotel" was a small, deliberately bounded category inside a wider historic-lodging list, not a catch-all term for any paid overnight stay available in town, which is worth remembering before comparing the word's use here to its use anywhere else.
What the four names themselves confirm
The Chalfonte and Peter Shields Inn both also appear, independently of this category page, in the general character the 2002-era pages implied for the association's membership, though wave one's articles did not single either name out specifically at the time of writing. Their appearance again, by name, in the 2014-2015 Hotels category is a second, later confirmation that these specific properties stayed part of the association's membership across more than one era of the site, not a one-time listing that quietly vanished between the two captures this project has reviewed.
Southern Mansion and Hotel Alcott, by contrast, do not appear by name in any wave one article at all, which makes this page the only place in this project's entire research where either property name is recorded, under any heading. Both are worth naming in full here for exactly that reason: without this category page, neither name would exist anywhere in this archive's written record of the association's membership, under any wave of this research into the site's printed history over time.
Counting against the full roster
Four names out of forty means the Hotels category covers exactly ten percent of the directory's total membership, a proportion worth stating plainly rather than leaving as a vague impression from the short list above. Bed and Breakfasts, at 28 of 40, covers seventy percent of the roster before accounting for the cross-listed name, making it by far the dominant category rather than merely the largest of the three on offer.
That proportion matters for anyone treating "hotel" and "Cape May historic lodging" as roughly synonymous terms. On this directory's own internal structure, they were not synonyms at all; a hotel-style stay was clearly the minority option inside a membership built mostly around smaller inns and guest houses, a distinction worth carrying into any direct comparison with a standard shore hotel elsewhere on the coast. The remaining ninety percent of the roster, across the other two categories, is where most of a visitor's actual choices would have sat, by any reasonable reading of this directory's own structure and its own posted numbers, counted and recounted.
Questions
Why only four hotels in a directory of 40?
The directory's other properties were classified as bed and breakfasts or guest houses. "Hotel" was the smallest of the three categories on the 2014-2015 site, covering about ten percent of the roster.
Is Peter Shields Inn a hotel or a bed and breakfast?
The 2014-2015 site filed it under both categories, with a matching posting date on each page. The archive does not explain the double listing.
Are there more hotels in Cape May today?
This archive only covers the 2014-2015 directory. It makes no claim about the current number of hotel-category properties in town.
